Cutting Teeth

It was something wild, framed in time
And happening upside down in my eye
It walked a tight rope to my brain
And flipped itself back around again

Bleeding green came from the trees
With acid rain and drops of agony
And so I took a step out from the screen
And felt the earth give out from under me

And so I push and pull and spread you out
Repress the words inside your mouth
And still you try to cut your teeth
On things we rendered obsolete

It’s a fiery line run through my spine
With screaming chills sent up the other side
An aching deep within my bones
A cyanide and arsenic marrow

So I closed my eyes until it passed
And fell asleep awoken in the grass
The feeling held as I let go
And disappeared into the undertow

And so I push and pull and spread you out
Repress the words inside your mouth
And still you try to cut your teeth
On things we rendered obsolete

You were simplified to strings of eight
And sold away for the curves upon your face
Locked away in winter clothes
And spiraled out just like a domino

Shaken up and rearranged
And made to recognize all your mistakes
Those heavy fists with callused lips
They kissed and tore away the infinite

And so I push and pull and spread you out
Repress the words inside your mouth
And still you try to cut your teeth
On things we rendered obsolete

And still you try to cut your teeth
On things we rendered obsolete
They’re obsolete
Obsolete

Rumors

Propped up like wooden scenery
The sun in my eyes
And the blood from your pen
Drawing jagged veins in the sky

Caught up in something beautiful
You're going away
With the pollen that floats on the breeze out to sea

Faking your way through the night
Heavy load, you were pulling the strings and tying me down to the road
Tying those chains to a ghost
To a part of me, to a time long ago

And always you were something to me

Images ache, and linger until they’re replaced
With pieces aligned, spoken so soft and resigned

Dolled up enemy
With red on your face
And a brush sweeping off
Every single morning you wake

Locked into some empty circumstance
It's stronger than love
And it's burning its way down the hall into us

Running around on a line, but you know
It was simple then deciding to go it alone
Now you're trying to hide bending low
To a new regime, to a blackened soul

But always you'll be something to me

Images ache, and linger until they’re replaced
With pieces aligned, spoken so soft and resigned

I will dig tunnels for graves
And some day I’ll get away

Look up at the sky, and wrap yourself up in the night
The rumors are true; you’ve made me out for a fool
A fool, a fool

On You Part I

Welcome to a new day
We’re living in an iron cage
So I am on to find the lawns
I am on to find better terrain
If I had a reason
If I had a warning sign
I can block
It from my mind
I can try to leave it all behind

So bake my hands dry
And leave them untied

It's on you

Wounded in the long light
Cornered in, caught out in the rain
And I could sing a different tune
But things will come and things will end the same
Heavy lay the head now
Heavy lay the troubled mind
I could hold you under it
And you can keep a thumb down on the line

So bake my hands dry
And leave them untied

It's on you

On You Part II

Emboldened over all your hope
Picking up your hands to show
All the things you’d gone and done
All the places that you’d run

Every word will not suffice
Every thought to clear the mind
Laying down in Willow’s Grove
And sketching out the overflow

How was I to know?
How was I supposed to know?
In this sea of change
That you’re a tidal wave

It’s on you

Watching islands overgrow
Pushing you out of your home
Making all your colors run
You burnt your skin beneath the sun

How was I to know?
How was I supposed to know?
In this sea of change
That you’re a tidal wave

It’s on you

Talking over talking heads
Dragging you around the shed
Drawing up some plans to leave
Dreaming of a long reprieve

How was I to know?
How was I supposed to know?
In this sea of change
That you’re a tidal wave

It’s on you

Carried Away

Tightly you wind
As you pick a side, side
And then walk away
To the back of the yard with the lock on the gate, well
Cover your lens
And hide all your mended ends
Put all the things you wanted
Inside a book and just learn to pretend

So adamant you shut your eyes
Eager to shake it off or try to compromise
And now it’s coming back to find you nightly
And it’s carved behind your heavy eyelids
Now there’s a tree growing in the yard
It’s just a symbol of your troubled cause
And I can pull the roots ‘til the ground will give way
And carry on, but

Let’s not get carried away
I won’t keep up the charade

So you bide your time
And sit clinging to the fading light, light
And then you hop a train
On the edge of a rail that'll take you away, so
Don't you get it wrong
I guess it's taken much too long
Put all the things you covet
Inside a fire, and watch as it's burning on

The cigarette ash in your eyes
It’s burning up the night like a starry sky
And when it flickers out in a southern wind
You’ll still be on the outside looking in
But baby never fret, cause there will come a time
When someone phones you up to say the end is nigh
And if you see yourself through a window pane
I’d say to carry on, but

Let’s not get carried away
I won’t keep up the charade

So now you pull the rope
And wrap it back around the pole
And now you hold the ends
And tie them together like a mantra
That you couldn’t bend, and
When autumn turns to cold
Lay a towel out in the white snow
And if you’re trapped in a pillowy haze
I know it’s easy now, but

Let’s not get carried away
(So now you pull the rope)
I won’t keep up the charade
(And now you hold the ends)

Rounds

Ashamed of the cause
We were going along
And now we’re alone in the dark
Adrift on the sea
You were floating to me
And you said you would never depart

So say you’re too worn down
And say you’ve made your rounds
Say you want it right
Well babe you were lost in the tide

Ashamed of my face
I was dragged into place
By the weight of my subconscious mind
Eschewed, I was crass
Lying down in the back
Overwhelmed by the sounds of the night

So say I’m too worn out
And tell me that you’ve made the rounds
So cover your hands and your pride
And tell me I don’t have the right

So stay that well-worn route
And say you’ve shot off all your rounds
Now take in the new sun’s rise
And feel as your cells all divide

Ends

Simple as it goes, patiently it waits
Hiding in the corner with a hook around your legs
And it'll come for you in the deepest sleep
And it'll take your balance down to zero like a thief
We will all erode, and begin to sway
Falling in the ocean as we sit around and wait
Well baby I am older than I can say
I'm on my way back out
As empty as I came

So lead all things away
Ends come and things wane

Shiver in the cold, crossing out my name
Walking to the edge as my fingers shake
But as I pull it back, and withdraw my hand
I knew you'd lost the faith
I knew you'd given up the plan

So lead all things away
Ends come and things wane

So is it better now
With everything in tow?
Like a part of you
That’s been carved into stone
So does it pass the time?
Or will it start to slow?
And you’ll be out in the cold
With everyone I know

So lead all things away
Ends come and things wane
